How to identify the Operating System in Windows & Mac computers

Operating system is the platform that connects the user with the hardware of a computer. In order to perform certain tasks we need to identify the OS that is installed in the computer for various reasons, it could be:

  • to install any additional compatible software or applications, or
  • to troubleshoot certain issues with the computer,
  • to upgrade or update certain new definitions or patches for the OS or any installed applications.
Many would say that we can identify the OS when the computer boots or during the startup of the computer. Though this is a valid response or method, being a technical support executive we should know how to identify the OS at hot condition (that is after the computer is started).

The following are the few methods to identify the OS on a windows computer:

You may type the following on the run box or command prompt.

  1. winver-> instant, a new pop-up box / window will open displaying the OS.
  2. dxdiag -> it will process and the response will be slightly delayed depending on the processing speed of the computer, the information will be in detail.
  3. msinfo32.exe-> instant, a new pop-up box / window will open displaying the OS & other related information.
  4. wmic os get Caption,CSDVersion /value -> in cmd prompt window-> single line display of the OS name
  5. systeminfo | findstr /B /C:"OS Name" /C:"OS Version" -> cmd -> 2 line information about the OS name and OS version.
  6. systeminfo | findstr /C:"OS"-> cmd-> information reg the OS, Version, Manufacturer, System make, BIOS version.
  7. systeminfo | findstr Build-> cmd -> 2 line information about the OS name and OS version.
  8. cmd>ver->single line information about the OS version
  9. Run>Regedit\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion -> Complete information about the OS

Now let's get in to the computer:

The computer is broadly divided into to 2 major categories:

  1. Hardware
  2. Software

In this blog we'll discuss in detail on the hardware part of the computer.

Hardware:

It is the physical device, refers to the tangible (things that you can feel, touch) components of a computer system.

Hardware components are further divided into 3 groups:

  1. Input devices
  2. Output devices
  3. System unit
1. Input device : An input device lets you communicate with the computer. You can use input devices to enter information and issue commands.
Example:

  • Keyboard: Is a standard input device of most computers, used to type data into the computer.
  • Mouse: Is a Hand-clicked device used for pointing and moving objects
  • Joystick: is an input device used for playing computer games.
  • Track Ball:Its an upside down mouse used for precision movement and pointing accuracy or for people with motor disability.
  • Light pen: is a device used to draw write, or issue commands when it touches a specially designed screen.
  • Scanner: a scanner allows you to scan documents, pictures, or graphics and view them on the computer, it a device that helps to convert hard form of the media to digital form that could be easily sent through email or other digital modes.
  • Microphone: Used to input sound into a computer.

2. Output device: An output device displays information on a screen, creates printed copies or generates sounds.
Example:

  • Printers: Is a device that produces text and or graphics on paper or any printable material.
  • Monitor: Is a device that provides digital output on a screen.
  • Multimedia Projector: is a type of video projector for displaying video, images or computer data on a screen or other flat surface.
  • Speaker: it plays sound transmitted as electrical signals from the sound card.

3. System Unit: The system unit is the part of the computer which is responsible for accepting and processing the data brought in by the input devices
Example:

  • Motherboard: It is the main circuit board of a computer. It is also known as mainboard or system board.
  • IDE: Integrated device Electronics is a standard interface for connecting a motherboard  to storage devices such as hard drives and CD-ROM/DVD drives. The initial IDE had a 16-bit interface that connected two devices through a single-ribbon like cable.
  • SATA: Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or Serial ATA: Is an interface used to connect ATA hard drives to a computer's motherboard.
  • Hard Disk Drive: Is an electromagnetic non removable storage device that is used to stores and retrieve billions of characters of data. It is attached to the motherboard of a computer.
